Whether you’re sick of your 9-to-5 job or you’ve hit the point in your career where the idea of reporting to someone else and sitting in meetings that don’t add value to your work makes you want to vomit, freelancing may be for you.
It’s a lifestyle that champions independence, freedom of choice, financial prosperity, and personal fulfilment. But if you’re looking to make the switch, you should be prepared for a number of challenges.
One of the most difficult things to adjust to as a freelancer is not having a steady stream of income.
Unless you’re lucky enough to have a family member or friend who will fund your business, you’ll need to build up your clientele and develop relationships with potential customers. This means networking, cold calling, and putting in the hours at online marketplaces to find projects that fit with your skillset.
If you’re not sure where to start, attend industry events and join online communities to meet people in your field. Also, consider offering your services for free to gain experience and build up a portfolio of work that you can show to clients (as long as you have permission!).
In addition to finding clients and working with different people, you’ll also have to learn how to manage your time effectively and handle money matters. You’ll be responsible for everything from setting rates and negotiating with clients to managing expenses and filing taxes.
If you’re not comfortable with these tasks, or if you have a lot of debt or dependents to care for, it may be best to hold off on making the transition until you have the necessary support in place.
The biggest reason to begin your freelance journey is the fact that you’ll be your own boss. Say goodbye to the days of fighting for a window desk or having to sit through unnecessary and time-wasting meetings.
Instead, you’ll be able to choose which projects you want to take on and how much time you want to dedicate to each task. You’ll also have the ability to avoid petty workplace drama and spend more time with loved ones.
Another benefit of freelancing is the opportunity to hone your creative and interpersonal skills. Working with different people and negotiating contracts requires certain abilities that can be hard to acquire in a corporate environment.
This includes establishing strong communication channels, meeting deadlines, and closing on agreements. If you’re a creative person who enjoys working with other people, freelancing is an excellent way to hone your skillset while also gaining independence and financial security.
Freelancing is an excellent option for anyone who wants to change up their work life or for those who aren’t ready to quit their full-time jobs. It can be done alongside a full-time job in the beginning, allowing you to slowly ease into your new career without compromising your finances or stability. Hopefully, this article has given you the motivation to kickstart your freelance career!
